Puppy Linux is an operating system for home use computers and is a unique family of lightweight Linux distributions that focuses on ease of use and minimal memory footprint.
The entire system can be run from RAM with current versions generally taking up about 210 MB, allowing the boot medium to be removed after the operating system has started. Applications such as AbiWord, Gnumeric and MPlayer are included, along with a choice of lightweight web browsers and a utility for downloading other packages. The distribution was originally developed by Barry Kauler and other members of the community until Kauler retired in 2013. The tool Woof can build a Puppy Linux distribution from the binary packages of other Linux distributions.

What is Puppy Linux?
Puppy Linux is an operating system for computers. Other well-known operating systems are Microsoft Windows, Apple OSX, and MS-DOS. PL is based on GNU/Linux. It is completely free and open source software.
What are Puppy’s Goals?
- Puppy will easily install to USB, Zip, hard drive or other storage media.
- Booting from CD (or DVD), Puppy can load itself totally into RAM so that the CD (DVD) drive is then free for other purposes.
- Booting from DVD (or CD), Puppy can save all work to the DVD (CD).
- Booting from USB flash drive (or other flash media), Puppy will minimize writes to extend its life.

Puppy Linux Features
- Easy – Just use a CD or USB flash to boot a PC. Puppy Linux is downloadable as ISO, an image that can be burned to CD or DVD.
- Fast – Because Puppy is small, it can live in your PC’s memory and be ready to quickly execute your commands, whereas in other systems, programs are first read from drive storage before being executed.
- Save Money – Even if your PC has no hard disk (ex, broken hard disk), you can still boot Puppy via CD or USB and continue working. Old PCs that no longer work with new systems will still work good-as-new with Puppy.
- Do More – Puppy boots in less than a minute, even in old PCs, and it does not require antivirus software. Administering Puppy is quick and minimal. With Puppy, you just have to take care of your data, which you can easily save to USB flash (Then forget about your operating system!). Your data can be read by other computers.

Useful tips for Puppy Linux OS
- You don’t have to install Puppy (to hard disk) to use it. Simply burn the ISO to CD/DVD and boot the PC or laptop with it. Once booted, you can then install it to USB flash (see the Setup menu), so you can use it for booting the PC when a CD is not available.
- You don’t have to save data to the hard drive to work with Puppy. You can save data to USB flash or even to Internet storage. When installed to USB flash, Puppy consumes only a little over 100 MB or about 256 MB with OpenOffice. You can use the same USB flash (where Puppy is installed) for saving data.
How not to install Puppy Linux

- BOOT FROM CD/DVD – Just boot using the CD/DVD and save to USB flash (you will be asked at shutdown to save or not). If you choose “Save”, Puppy will create your save file and use this next time you boot so that you can continue with your previous work. The save file will be named pup_save.2fs (you can add a SPECIALNAME during the first save to make it pup_save-SPECIALNAME.2fs).You may also be asked if the programs sfs (like pup_421.sfs or pup-431.sfs) will be copied to your disk drive to speed up booting – Puppy will ask you about this (it is an option to speed up booting when Puppy has detected a hard disk). Note that some puplets use a different name for its programs sfs.Final note in using CD/DVD: you can also save to the same CD/DVD that you booted from (Here, DVD works better, but the DVD containing Puppy must be burned initially as “not final”, i.e., that more files can be added to it; advanced CD burning software can do this in Windows, and Puppy has BurnISO2cd for this).
- BOOT FROM USB – While booted from CD or DVD, (see Setup in the menu for the installer). You can then tell Puppy at shutdown to save to the same USB drive, or to your hard disk.
