This appendix illuminates the furnace specifications from manufacturer model numbers. An Amana model number is as an example of how manufacturers code furnace characteristics. Table 7.2.1 shows the Amana model number “GUID045CA30.” The first row of the table shows the model number broken into eight cells.
If you need service, or you need to troubleshoot an issue regarding your HVAC system, it always helps to know the model number. Rather than have you commit them all to memory, we made our model numbers easy to find.
Start by looking in your owner’s manual or any other paperwork that came with your product. If you don’t happen to have them handy, you’ll also find the model number printed right on the unit.
Air conditioners, heat pumps including geothermal and packaged products
Look on the back of your unit, and you’ll find the model number listed on a silver series rating-plate located above the service valve connections. If your heat pump is geothermal, the model information should be easily found on the front of the unit.
Gas or oil furnace
Remove the front door and look inside the unit. You should see the model number printed on rating-plate or decal.
Ventilators, evaporator coils and fan coils
You should be able to see the model number on a rating-plate or decal right on the front of a ventilator or an evaporator coil and on the side if you have a fan coil.
Air purifiers
You should be able to find the model number on a decal inside the front access panel.
All other products

Each Hvac brand has its own serial and model number and each serial and model number have a different way of telling you the information.
You can’t use Carrier serial and model to decode Trane hvac units. It would be confusing and wrong.
Some hvac brand also has new code for its new hvac units. For example, York hvac had two different serial numbers for 1971 through 2004 and for 2005 through the present day. You can’t use information from 2005 to decode 1980 hvac unit, it wouldn’t works.
These air conditioner numbers mean a lot. Without the serial and model number, it would be hard to find a replacement part of that central ac unit (I’m not referring to small parts).
