The movie begins with Bella “awakening” as a vampire . Soon she and Edward go out for their first hunt before meeting their half-human half-vampire daughter, Renesmee, for it is considered dangerous being a newly created vampire with thirst. During the hunt, Bella smells a bleeding human in the woods and manages to control herself so as not to kill him, something considered incredible for any vampire. Bella realizes that she does not feel the same need she felt as human for Jacob , considering her own need as a human weakness, eliminated after her transformation. She attacks him after discovering what happened between him and his daughter. However, Bella ends up accepting this fact afterwards and they all live in complete harmony.
Jacob stops the Cullens from telling Charlie that Bella died, instead he meets Charlie and tells him that his daughter was dying and that to save her, she had to “change,” but Charlie does not understand and claims that Bella would never change, so that he can understand this change, Jacob turns into a wolf in front of him. At the meeting between Charlie and Bella, she does not tell the whole truth, just to protect her father, saying only that she is well and that this was the most important.
Bella is temporarily the strongest vampire of the Cullen clan, for being newly created, even beating Emmett in an arm drop, and breaking a large rock in half using only his hands. The daughter of Bella and Edward, Renesmee, grows rapidly, completing a very advanced age in a few months of life. Irina, who is part of the Denali clan, sees Renesmee next to Jacob turned into a wolf, and believes her to be an Immortal Child – In the world of vampires there are laws, and one of those laws condemns the transformation of a child into an immortal being. It is a very serious crime since a vampire child will have no control over their actions and will draw attention to their existence. Due to the grief felt by the wolves of La Push for having killed Laurent and the outrage of the Cullens in supposedly having violated the law, Irina goes to Italy to inform the Volturi the “crime” committed by the Cullen.
Alice has a vision where the Volturi decided to come after the Cullen clan to destroy them and especially to kill Renesmee. The Cullen decide to reunite several Carlisle- friendly vampires around the world to prove to the Italian clan that Renesmee is the biological daughter of a vampire with a human being and poses no danger to the secret of the immortals’ existence. Mysteriously, Alice and Jasperflee from Forks, leaving a letter encrypted for Bella, in parallel Jacob gathers all the wolves of his tribe so they also help prove to the Volturi that Renesmee is not a child transformed. Bella discovers that her gift is to create a shield that protects her from any vampire’s mental attacks, and can expand it according to her will and protect whoever she wants (her gift was already latent when human, a reason that prevented Edward from reading his mind or Jane to torture her). Upon understanding Alice’s message, Bella discovers that Jacob will be responsible for protecting Renesmee during the great clash with the Volturi.
The Volturi finally appear and meet the Cullen, the wolves and their allies in a snow field. Aro soon when it arrives looks for Alice, but she is not there. Aro reads Edward’s thoughts and discovers that the vampire tells the truth when he claims to be Renesmee’s biological father, being Bella’s daughter when he was still human. Soon the Volturi ask Irina what she saw exactly, she says it was a mistake and that she takes all the blame for her actions, the Volturi then kill her for the false testimony provoking revolt in their sisters who are next to the Cullen. Even after all this, Aro claims he can not live in doubt as to how Renesmee could threaten the secret of vampire existence in the future.
The mentally gifted Volturi try to oppress clans and wolves, however, Bella manages to design her shield and protects everyone by her side, taking away the main advantage of the Volturi. The battle between the Cullen and the Volturi seems imminent, but Alice and Jasper emerge at this moment, catching Aro’s attention, who wants Alice’s presence in the Volturi guard. She assures him that Renesmee will not cause any trouble, and claims that Aro is only seeking pretexts to start a major confrontation, even though the Cullen have committed no crime. But Aro remains irreducible, so Alice says that she has a strong reason for not having a war, she asks Aro to touch his hand, so he can see for himself. However, Aro’s intentions do not change, he says he does not believe in the Cullens and still wants a war between the clans. Alice strikes him, initiating a great battle. Jasper is attacked by Jane, but Bella shields him with his shield; seeing her disabled sister, Alec attacks Bella and tries to kill her, but can not. Jane uses her gifts again on Jasper who ends up being killed by Demetri. At the same time Jacob flees and guarantees Renesmee’s protection. Benjamin, a Cullen ally who has the ability to control the four elements of nature, breaks the snowfield in half to help the Cullen kill the Volturi more quickly, then a large cliff opens in the middle of the ice. The battle is over, and it is now realized that the war was nothing but a vision of Alice about the future. By touching her hand and reading her thoughts, Aro sees that the Volturi will lose the war against the Cullens and their allies, if they start it. Finally, the Italian clan ends up accepting the existence of Renesmee, especially when Alice shows him a young hybrid, who is the son of a human with a vampire, but grew up until the age of seven, when he completed the adult appearance and became immortal, not aging after 150 years. The Volturi, frustrated and angry, believe and leave, promising indirectly, that they will come back to take revenge. So everyone celebrates, every ally and friend of the Cullen go away.
Alice has a vision of Jacob and Renesmee as an adult, together with Edward and Bella on La Push beach, showing that everything will be all right. The final scene shows Bella pulling away her shield so that Edward reads his thoughts for the first time, and arranges in his mind the thoughts of love for Edward from the first moment he saw him. After Edward manages to read Bella’s thoughts, the two kiss, swear that their love will last forever.
