Overview[edit]

The PSP was designed by Shin'ichi Ogasawara (小笠原伸一) for the Sony Computer Entertainment subsidiary of Sony Corporation. Early models pre-installed with 1.xx firmware were made in Japan but in order to cut costs, Sony has farmed out PSP production to non-Japanese manufacturers, mainly in China for units pre-installed with firmware version 2.00 and above. The unit measures 170 mm (6.7 inches) in length, 74 mm (2.9 inches) in width, and 23 mm (0.9 inches) in depth, and has a mass of 280 grams (a weight of 0.62 lb) including the battery. The Samsung (previously Sharp) branded TFT LCD screen measures 110 mm (4.3 in) diagonal with a 16:9 ratio and a 480×272 pixel resolution capable of 16.77 million colors. It has four possible brightness settings, the brightest of which is disabled in all official firmware versions unless on A/C power. Additionally, hidden brightness settings can be enabled when using Custom Firmware.

The PSP uses a drive compatible with Sony's proprietary Universal Media Disc format. Use of the drive increases battery drain by approximately 10% and the system has been criticized for having very slow data transfer speeds, translating into load times of more than two minutes in total for some games. However this has been improved with the redesigned Slim & Lite PSP which has faster loading times, according to GameSpot's 'Sony PSP Slim Hands-On Report'.

Despite its movie and music playback capabilities, the PSP has primarily gaming-oriented controls (as opposed to the controls typical to television remotes or MP3 players): two shoulder buttons (L and R), the PlayStation, start and select buttons, a digital 4-directional pad, and an analog 'nub' which is slid rather than tilted. There is also a row of secondary controls along the underside of the screen, for controlling volume, music settings (either switching the audio off and on in games or selecting different equalizer presets), screen brightness, and a 'Home' button for accessing the system's main menu. Pressing the Home button while doing anything except playing a game will bring up the XMB, which theoretically allows for multitasking; however whatever the user was doing is cancelled upon accessing anything else, except in the latest firmware release that can display pictures and play music simultaneously.

The PSP's default battery life varies widely depending on application from less than 3 hours while accessing a wireless network and having screen brightness on its highest setting to more than 11 hours during MP3 playback with the screen turned off.[1] An extended-life 2200 mAh battery will increase this by approximately 20%. A sleep mode is also available that uses minimal battery power to keep the system's RAM active, allowing for 'instant on' functionality. A system in sleep mode (with a fully charged battery) has been shown to lose an average of only 1% battery life per 24-hour period. The PSP-1000 series is equipped with a two-pin docking connector immediately below the AC adapter jack for easy drop in charging using a docking station that was to be sold separately. However no such dock was ever released by Sony, and therefore are absent from the PSP-2000 and later versions.

On October 1, 2009 (November 1 in Japan) Sony released the PSP Go, a redesigned version of the PSP. The PSP Go features a sliding design, allowing the screen to slide up past the main controls. The PSP Go lacks a UMD drive, instead containing 16GB of internal memory on which games are stored.

Technical specifications[edit]

A Universal Media Disc (UMD), the storage medium for PSP games.

CPU[edit]

The PSP's main microprocessor is a multifunction device named 'Allegrex' that includes a 32-bit MIPS32 R4k-based CPU (Little Endian), a Floating Point Unit, and a Vector Floating Point Unit. Additionally, there is a processor block known as 'Media Engine' that contains another 32-bit MIPS32 R4k-base CPU, hardware for multimedia decoding (such as H.264), and a programmable DSP dubbed 'Virtual Mobile Engine'. The secondary CPU present in the Media Engine is functionally equivalent to the primary CPU save for a lack of a VPU. The MIPS CPU cores are globally clocked between 1 and 333 MHz. During the 2005 GDC, Sony revealed that it had capped the PSP's CPU clock speed at 222 MHz for licensed software. Its reasons for doing so are unknown, but are the subject of some speculation. Various homebrew tools enable users to operate at 333 MHz, generally leading to a higher frame rate at the expense of battery life. On June 22, 2007, Sony Computer Entertainment confirmed that the firmware version 3.50 does in fact remove this restriction and allows future games to run at the full 333 MHz speed. It does not affect already-released games.[2]

Memory[edit]

The system has 32 MiB main RAM in the original PSP and 64 MiB in the PSP 2000 (and subsequent series) and 4 MiB embedded DRAM in all models. The 4 MiB of eDRAM consists of 2 MiB dedicated to the graphics processing unit and 2 MB dedicated to the Media Engine secondary processor. There is no memory management unit for either CPU. No evidence of a TLB has been found. The co-processor that normally manages the TLB-based MMU seems to be a custom effort by Sony and has no integrated memory. Both CPUs contain 16 KiB of two-way set associative instruction cache and data cache respectively. There is additionally 16 KiB of scratchpad RAM which, while faster than main RAM, is not nearly as fast as the integrated cache.

3D vertically stacked eDRAM[edit]

The PSP's eDRAM memory chip is the earliest known use of a three-dimensional integrated circuit (3D IC) chip in a commercial product. The eDRAM (embedded DRAM) memory was manufactured by Toshiba in a 3D system-in-package chip with two integrated circuit (IC) dies stacked vertically.[3] Toshiba called it 'semi-embedded DRAM' at the time, before later calling it a stacked 'chip-on-chip' (CoC) solution.[3][4]

The 166 MHz graphics chip has 2 MiB embedded memory and through its 512 bit interface provides hardware polygon and NURBSrendering, 16bit Depth Buffer, Bézier Surfaces, Bézier Curves, B-Splines, hardware directional per-vertex lighting, Bloom, Motion Blur, Gouraud Shading, Cel Shading, culling, mipmapping, LOD, clipping, Lightmapping, environment mapping, Render to Texture, shadow mapping, shadow volumes, environment projection and perspective-correct texture mapping, texture compression, tessellation, Hardware Transform and Lighting (T&L), fogging, alpha blending, alpha, depth and stencil tests, transparency effects, post-processing effects, vertex blending for morphing effects, and dithering, all in 16 or 24 bit color. The graphics chip also handles image output. Specifications state that the PSP is capable of rendering 33 million flat-shaded polygons per second, with a 664 million pixel per second fill rate.[5]

Multimedia playback[edit]

The PSP is also able to play back movies on a UMD (Universal Media Disc) format.PSP's audio player supports a number of audio codecs, including ATRAC, AAC, MP3, and WMA, and has the option to be played with or without a set of six visualizations. The image viewer will display several common image formats including JPEG, Bitmap, and PNG. However, image viewing is limited by the file size and resolution of the image and any image exceeding a file size or resolution cannot be displayed. This is usually the case with attempting to show DSLR images on a PSP.

MPEG-4 and AVC video formats are also compatible with PSP. With reasonable video and audio bit-rate settings (a resolution of 320×240, a video bit rate of 500 Kbit per second, and an audio sampling rate of 22050 Hz) a 22-minute video file is roughly 55 MB, enough to fit on a Memory Stick Duo as small as a 64 MB. At the same rate, a hundred-minute feature film can fit on a 256 MB Memory Stick. As of firmware update version 3.30, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile video files of the following sizes can be played: 720×480, 352×480, and 480×272. Many video files, both free-to-distribute and copyrighted, have been encoded for the PSP and are available on the Internet. Game and movie trailers are increasingly available, even from studios' official websites.

There are numerous software applications and hardware devices specifically designed for PSP's various media-centric applications.

Wireless networking[edit]

The WLAN processor is an ARM9 from Marvell Semiconductor.[6]

The PSP can connect to a wireless network through Wi-FiIEEE 802.11b. This allows 2–16 players with PSPs to create a local, ad hoc network for multiplayer gameplay; or to connect to the Internet via an Internet-connected Wi-Fi router. One can also use an ad hoc network to send images from one PSP to another by use of the 'send' and 'receive' functions that appear in the 'PHOTO' menu. By connecting to the Internet, players can compete against other players also connected to the Internet, or browse the web and download files to the Memory Stick via the built-in web browser. Use of wireless network features increases the power consumption and results in a lower battery life.[7]

The non-slim PSP featured a standard IrDA port located on the top left of the device. To date, the only games or applications to use this feature have been homebrew. This can be used to control many TVs as well as other infrared devices. The port is absent from the new PSP Slim redesign, probably due to the lack of any official software that utilised it. Instead, the Wi-Fi switch has moved to the top where the port previously was, so gamers do not accidentally turn Wi-Fi off when browsing the web, playing online, etc.

Currently, only the PSP Go is equipped with Bluetooth technology.

Internet connectivity[edit]

The PSP's main menu allows the user to configure the system for use across the Internet or an intranet via a wireless connection, known as infrastructure mode. The PSP can recognize protected and non-protected wireless networks within its range, and supports connecting to WEP and WPAencrypted networks (WPA2 is not supported). South Korean PSPs have shipped with software providing web browsing and multimedia streaming features, but only through company-owned Wi-Fi hot spots, and with a monthly fee.[8]

Use of infrastructure networks in PSP software began with a small number of titles at the U.S. launch, supporting online play. The RSS features allow the user to download video web feeds or listen to podcasts from websites. RSS or podcast content can be saved to the Memory Stick Duo. Audio (and more recently video) content can be streamed and played 'live'. After the release of firmware 3.50, there is now an RSS Guide function.

Sony's LocationFree Player allows users to stream live television broadcasts (or other video content) to their PSP, within their Wi-Fi network, or remotely via the Internet. After the release of firmware 3.80, streaming audio is now available to be used on the PSP currently only supporting ShoutCast and Icecast internet radio.

On January 30, 2008, firmware update 3.90 was released which enabled Skype WiFi phone function on the Slim & Lite model, Brite model, and the PSP Go.[9]

Gamesharing[edit]

Some titles for the PSP support a feature dubbed 'gamesharing,' which facilitates a limited set of multiplayer features between two PSPs with only one copy of the game UMD. A reduced version of the game being shared is transferred to the PSP without a UMD via the PSP's Wi-Fi connection, whereupon it is loaded into RAM and runs. Such 'gameshare' versions of titles usually have their feature set reduced because of technical limitations (small RAM size, slow bandwidth of 802.11b connection).

  2. Unzip file to see all the 8BF files

  3. Place the 8BF files in the filters path of the host application (best check our videos for this) such as in program files

  4. Access the plugins via the filters menu or plugins (depends on the application)

Plugin Requirements such as Photoshop and PSP etc (check out the samplers for more clarity there)

The Photoshop plugins are also for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements and Corel ® PSP X9 X8 X7 X6 X5 X4 as well as earlier. Painter 2017 2016 2015 X3 12 etc

Output options / blending modes for the plugins

The plugins all include 100 output settings such as

1. invert the image

2. apply only to the red channel

3. wrap the color, limit the colors to the current foreground and BG color range

4. set to difference

5. darken only

6. different darken effects

7. Many types of tiling

8. zapped color effects

9. Edge effects

10 Posterization etc.

Blending modes are like additional filters added to the effect, adding millions and millions of new creative effects. You can still use the standard blending modes and opacity that are available to the app such as darken etc as well as fade the result via the fade command.

Photoshop plugin post processing modes and adding millions of gradient overlays and blends such as quadrant gradients etc

All the plugins include 18 post processing settings such as applying a randomized blend to the end result of the filter effect and includes billions of amazing combinations. The randomized color blends effects and blends can add subtle color changes to any image or text or layer. The color effect combinations can range to millions and millions of unique color effects such as quadrant effects and also linear gradient effects, square themed gradient blends and many more

You can use the plugins with Photoshop actions and scripts to replay the effects in countless combinations

They can be saved as an action so you can use the actions in batch processing / scripting. You can combine many of the effects, combine them with native Adobe ® Photoshop ® effects and save as an action. Re-use the action in future image processing.

Use the plugin effects modes to create super unique sepia / blur / distortions etc in seconds

They all include 20 effects modes. Instead of the end result of the tool being used in the final output, the filter effect is generated as a blur or smear or paint effect or grain effect based on the strength of the filter effect. Use the effects modes to apply totally weird and wonderful unique warping and paint and blur effects to any image.

1. blurs

2. warping

3. smearing

4. contrast effects

5. grains

Use the plugins in RGB and CMYK and LAB and 16bit and 32bit image modes

The Photoshop plugins can be used in RGB as well as CMYK and Grayscale and LAB as well as in 16 bits / channel (for many of the features). Change the image mode via the image command in Adobe ® Photoshop ® from RGB to CMYK and they will still appear enabled in the filters menu, apply your effects in CMYK. You can also go to the channels panel and apply the effects to individual channels as well as use them via the split channels and merge channel feature. You can use the 8BF tools in individual channels in most color modes but you can also modify the end result on a channel by channel basis by using the red and green and blur sliders included in all the tools. You can make the entire image a whole lot redder or greener etc.

You can also randomize these by clicking the color setting button.

You can also apply as a factor in many tools so the reds will be set to 110% of the red channel etc as well as adding the current red channel plus a set of 10 etc up to the allowed maximum for the channel (there are also wrap features which means the channel wrapping can wrap from 255 (white) back to 0 (black).

The plugins all include a vast range of randomization features for millions of unique effects - simply click and create

All the Photoshop plugins come with a selection of randomization controls such as the 'Xtreme' which randomizes the most settings to the extreme, creating literally millions and millions of image effects.

The 'blend' control randomizes the blend / output options so click the blend and the image will invert or a frame will appear or the red color will become dominant

The 'tweak' control applies subtle variations of the current settings and will modify only some of the controls - useful if you are fairly close to a setting but just want to tryout certain close settings (good idea perhaps to save the settings before you click the extreme or color etc as you will not be able to undo or return to the earlier settings

Tool settings for the plugins such as factor controls to modify the color or add different blurring effects

All the Photoshop plugins contain their own unique tools settings: some are much the same in many of the tools such as a factor control which controls the color of the image as well as the mix tools which control the blend with the effect and the original source image.

The plugins also include dropdown combo boxes to radically alter the functionality of the tool, settings sliders such as intensity, mixing of image and effect, blurring, quality of effect and more. Enter the settings via the interactive sliders or enter the strength of the effect in a standard text / edit field at the right side to the slider.

There are checkboxes such as inverse or link r-g-b etc which links the channel information to the red channel settings (userful for grayscale etc effects)

Photoshop plugins and alpha channels to control the range of the effects + modify the alpha using the plugins

If you apply the effect on a layer, the alpha channel can also be modified by the effect as well as the image itself. There are many different layer / alpha channel modification settings such as adding the red channel of the effect to the alpha channel, or applying a blend to to the alpha channel, or inversing of the effect, edge settings and many more. You can also then use the result of any alpha channel with the layer effects / styles such as unique drop shadows or unique textures / bevels.

The Photoshop plugins work with PaintShop Pro, Painter, Photoshop and countless other applications on PC

The Andrew's tools work in many different PC software tools such as PhotoImpact etc. Some functionality might be different in each of the tools as each application uses different features and color approaches so in some the foreground and background color might be ignored as they are not supplied to the tool so in Adobe ® Photoshop ® if the foreground is red and the background is blue the range may be modified by this, in PSP this will not be the case.

Digital Photography and the plugins for the most amazing color effects and blending

The filters all come with modes that can be useful for digital photography such as borders as well as invert, solarization, posterization, saturation as well as tone settings. Use the output and effects modes to tweak an image in 1000s of ways, from the subtle to the extreme

Photoshop pugins preview dialog - zoom into the effect or see the entire picture via the preview

All the effects include a large preview screen to show the effect. You can go in and out within limits. The preview in many cases can also be used as an interactive tool to change the settings of some fields, simply click the preview to select the color or change the intensity of an effect

Andrew's filters - 1000 plugins series all created by Andrew Buckle of graphicxtras.com

The effects are not the Andrew's Filters. I created the Andrew's Filters back in 1995, these filters are not related other than that I created both sets. The range of effects in this later series is hundreds of times greater in range and features set than the earlier very popular series. Please check out many web sites such as the Steve's Desktop Photography site for a full list of all the filters in the 'Andrew's Filters collection'. I no longer store the filters on the graphicxtras web site.

The Andrew's filters - Filter factory plug-ins and code / freeware - 1000 filters. Probably not many people remember the plugins that I created back in 1995-1996 or so (in Nijmegan, Holland mainly), I had them tucked away for quite a while. The Andrew's filters plugins were generally stored on the Steve's desktop Photography site (excellent site by Steve Fisher) but as the plugins probably can't run (I haven't checked for a while) I have decided to release the code set for all the 1000 filters.

Please feel free to use the coding in any development of plugins, apps, etc as required. There is a short license included such as who created the code. Use at your own risk (means we are not supporting them any more!) They are non-exclusive so they can be used by anyone. No time limits etc. The ZIP contains the code in the text file format and an AFS format. Hope you find them of interest and any link back to this page source is always welcome. Please download the file and use the code as required. I still occasionally dip into the ideas and code myself and use some in my latest plugin tools as well.

You can modify the color used by the plugins via the foreground and background colors in the Photoshop toolbar

Many of the filters use the color from the toolbox. If the effect or setting uses the foreground color or BG color of the PS toolbox then you will see this as indicated in the tool dropdowns as BG and FG colors. You can change the color via the PS toolbox. Changing the color combinations can radically change some of the effects (there are also millions of possible color combinations!). Most of the blend filters use the BG and FG color information to create the blending / graduated effect. Some software do not return the color information so in those cases they will only probably use a single pre-defined color

Categories for the Photoshop plugins such as edge / blur / color / distortions etc

The filters are spread over multiple categories, they appear in the menu of Adobe ® Photoshop ® in their overall category. The categories include edge / blur / color / distortion etc. Go to Adobe ® Photoshop ® and open a document or create a new document. Go to the filter menu and select the filters via the AP categories. The are all listed in categories loosely related to their basic function such as blurs are in AP [Blurs]. Most come with 1000s of effects so even if the tool is called a blur effect it is quite as likely to be used as a smear or gradient effect so the categories are very loose.

How do I receive the files and what do I get when I receive the zip file (use Stuffit Expander to expand etc)

You receive the Photoshop plugins as a ZIP (whether the collection set or the individuals) You should be able to expand the set without any additional software. If you do need some software to unzip the file, the best tool is probably Smith Micro's (FREE) stuffit expander tool. That should resolve any issues but in most cases. Once you have unzipped the set, select all the 8BF files and place them in the required path for your host application. Any questions, please e-mail us

Smart objects / filters - all the plugins can be used with smart objects in Photoshop to combine with other filters

The Photoshop plugins work with the new smart objects feature. You can add the effects to all kinds of layers and shapes and then simply go over to the layers panel and de-select or remove them from the smart filters as well as change any of the settings and the end result of the effect. You can move them up and down the chain of effects. Dosbox download.

Recommendations relating to the Photoshop plugins

'Totally fascinated with the graphicxtras tools', 'Use them 90% of the time for mixing colors to achieve artistic effects' - Jeff Wietor (www.raincoat.tv)

'In the growing market of filters Andrew's work shines above the mediocrity of mostly uninspired 'effects'. His work is not only inexhaustible in scope and variety it is original and fresh. Andrew's Filters, settings, do not just blur the distance between effects and art, his work is art. Welcome to the future.' Dede Kafka
